About Mujtahid

Scholars set strict conditions for a mujtahid, including mastery of Arabic, the Quran, the hadith sciences and the principles of fiqh. The imams who founded the schools are the best-known examples. Ordinary Muslims are generally advised to ask a trusted scholar rather than derive rulings on their own.
