How the Hijri calendar works

The Hijri calendar counts years from the Prophet's migration (Hijrah) from Makkah to Madinah. It is a lunar calendar: each month begins around the new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days, so the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year and its months move through the seasons. The Islamic day begins at sunset.

The important dates are Ramadan (the ninth month), Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal), the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah), Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul Hijjah), the Islamic New Year (1 Muharram) and Ashura (10 Muharram). Dates here are calculated, and the actual start of a month follows the moon sighting in your country.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Gregorian date to a Hijri date?

Pick the date in the Gregorian box and press Convert. The converter shows the Hijri day, month and year, the weekday, and the date in both English and Arabic. You can also convert the other way, from Hijri to Gregorian.

Why can the Hijri date be different in my country?

This tool uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, which is calculated in advance. Many countries begin a month only when the new moon is sighted, which can be a day earlier or later. Use the adjustment (-1, 0, +1 day) to match your local announcement.

How many days does a Hijri month have?

A Hijri month has 29 or 30 days, depending on the moon. A Hijri year has 12 months and is about 354 or 355 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year.

Does the converter need an internet connection?

No. The dates are calculated in your browser, so the converter keeps working offline. If your browser does not support the Umm al-Qura calendar, a built-in tabular calculation is used instead.
