Which days are recommended to fast?
- Ramadan: obligatory for every adult Muslim who is able (Quran 2:183-185).
- The white days, the 13th, 14th and 15th of every Hijri month.
- Mondays and Thursdays each week.
- The Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah) for those who are not performing Hajj.
- Ashura (10 Muharram) together with the 9th or the 11th.
- Six days of Shawwal, after Eid al-Fitr (Sahih Muslim 1164).
- Extra fasting in Sha'ban, Muharram and the first days of Dhul Hijjah.
Fasting is not allowed on Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and the days of Tashreeq (11 to 13 Dhul Hijjah). Scholars note limited exceptions, for example a pilgrim without a sacrificial animal on the days of Tashreeq.
How the Hijri dates work
The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar of 29 or 30 days per month, so it moves about 11 days earlier against the Gregorian calendar each year. This page calculates the dates in your browser using the Umm al-Qura calendar, so it works without an internet connection. The real start of a month depends on the sighting of the new moon in your country and can differ by a day, so you can adjust the date by -1 or +1 day. The Islamic day starts at sunset.
Suhoor ends at the start of Fajr and iftar is at Maghrib. The times shown come from the AlAdhan service for the city you choose.

Frequently asked questions
Which days are recommended for voluntary fasting?
Scholars mention Mondays and Thursdays, the white days (13th, 14th and 15th of each Hijri month), the Day of Arafah for those not on Hajj, Ashura on 10 Muharram together with the 9th or 11th, six days of Shawwal after Ramadan, and extra fasting in Sha'ban, Muharram and the first days of Dhul Hijjah.
On which days is fasting not allowed?
Fasting is not allowed on Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal), Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul Hijjah) and the three days of Tashreeq (11 to 13 Dhul Hijjah). Scholars note limited exceptions, for example for a pilgrim who could not find a sacrificial animal. Ask a qualified scholar about your own situation.
Why can the Hijri date differ by a day?
This calendar calculates dates offline with the Umm al-Qura calendar, but many countries start a month only after the new moon is sighted. Use the day adjustment (-1, 0, +1) to match your local announcement. The Islamic day also begins at sunset.
Should I make up missed Ramadan days before voluntary fasts?
Many scholars advise making up missed Ramadan days first, and they differ about the details, especially for the six days of Shawwal. Please ask a qualified scholar about your situation.
