The adab of tilawah โ how the believer approaches, recites and honors the words of Allah, drawn from the Qur'an, the Sunnah and the works of the scholars. Imam an-Nawawi opens his At-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Qur'an by noting that the Qur'an is the noblest of speech, and so it deserves the noblest of manners in approaching it. Below are the key etiquettes, each with a supporting verse or hadith.
It is recommended to be in a state of purity (wudu) and to recite in a clean place. The mushaf should not be touched without wudu, as Allah says of the Qur'an:
It is preferred to face the qiblah, sit with dignity and tranquillity, and recite in a state of humility as if before a king โ for one is in conversation with his Lord. The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
Begin recitation by seeking refuge in Allah from Shaytan, then the basmalah at the start of a surah (except At-Tawbah):
Recite slowly, clearly and beautifully, observing the rules of tajweed, neither rushing nor distorting the words:
The aim of recitation is not merely the tongue but the heart โ to reflect, be moved, and act upon what is read:
The Qur'an should soften the heart and bring tears of awe and longing. Allah praises those moved by His words:
When passing a verse of sajdah, it is Sunnah to prostrate, glorifying Allah. The Prophet ๏ทบ would prostrate and his Companions with him. The supplication of the sajdah includes:
The mushaf must be honored: kept clean, placed high (not on the floor beneath other objects), not carried into impure places, and held with care. This stems from glorifying the symbols of Allah:
One should not cut off recitation for idle talk, and when the Qur'an is recited aloud, others should listen quietly:
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will have a reward, and that reward will be multiplied by ten. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter." (Tirmidhi 2910). And: "The one who is proficient in the Qur'an will be with the noble, righteous scribes, and the one who recites it with difficulty, stumbling over it, will have a double reward." (Bukhari 4937).
