📖 Parables of the Quran

The similitudes (amthal) Allah gives in the Quran, with their meanings.

🕷️

The Spider's House

Surah Al-Ankabut 29:41

"The example of those who take allies other than Allah is like that of the spider who takes a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew."

Meaning: Those who rely on anything other than Allah for protection are like a spider relying on its fragile web — it looks like shelter but offers no real security.

🌳

The Good Word like a Good Tree

Surah Ibrahim 14:24-25

"Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?"

Meaning: A good word (faith, the testimony of tawhid) is like a strong, fruitful tree — deeply rooted, enduring, and beneficial, giving fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord.

🏜️

The Mirage

Surah An-Nur 24:39

"But those who disbelieved — their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing."

Meaning: The deeds of disbelievers may appear valuable to them, but on the Day of Judgment they will find them worthless — like a thirsty traveler chasing a mirage.

💨

Ashes in the Wind

Surah Ibrahim 14:18

"The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day."

Meaning: Good deeds done without faith are scattered and lost like ashes in a storm — they have no weight or value before Allah.

🌧️

Rain Reviving Dead Earth

Surah Al-Hadid 57:20

"[It is] like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris."

Meaning: Worldly life is fleeting — like vegetation that flourishes after rain, then withers and crumbles. A reminder not to be deceived by its temporary beauty.

💡

The Light Verse

Surah An-Nur 24:35

"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass..."

Meaning: Allah's guidance illuminates the believer's heart layer upon layer — a radiant, pure light that leads from darkness into clarity.

🌾

The Two Gardens

Surah Al-Kahf 18:32-44

"And present to them an example of two men: We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines, and We bordered them with palm trees..."

Meaning: A wealthy man grew arrogant and ungrateful, crediting himself rather than Allah — so his gardens were destroyed. A warning against pride in worldly blessings.

🪰

The Fly

Surah Al-Hajj 22:73

"O people, an example is presented, so listen to it. Indeed, those you invoke besides Allah will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for it."

Meaning: False deities are utterly powerless — they cannot even create or reclaim something from a fly. Only Allah is worthy of worship.

🐕

The Dog that Pants

Surah Al-A'raf 7:176

"So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants."

Meaning: One who has knowledge but abandons it for worldly desires is like a dog that pants regardless — driven endlessly by craving, never satisfied.

🌱

The Grain of Seven Ears

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261

"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed which grows seven ears; in each ear there are a hundred grains."

Meaning: Charity given for Allah's sake is multiplied immensely — at least seven hundredfold — and Allah multiplies even more for whom He wills.
