وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلًا مِّن قَبْلِكَ ۖ مِنْهُم مَّن قَصَصْنَا عَلَيْكَ وَمِنْهُم مَّن لَّمْ نَقْصُصْ عَلَيْكَ "And We have sent messengers before you. Some of them We have related to you, and some of them We have not related to you." — Quran 40:78
Belief in the prophets of Allah is one of the six articles of faith (iman) in Islam. Allah has sent messengers (rusul) and prophets (anbiya) to every nation throughout human history, all carrying the same core message: worship Allah alone, follow His commands, and prepare for the meeting with Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the total number of prophets is 124,000, of whom 313 were messengers carrying new scripture or law. The Quran names 25 of them by name — and we are commanded to believe in them all without distinction.
From Adam, the first man whom Allah created with His own hands, to Muhammad ﷺ, the seal of the prophets who completed the religion — the Quran tells us the names and stories of twenty-five chosen servants of Allah. Between them stand Nuh who built the ark, Ibrahim the friend of Allah, Musa who spoke with his Lord, Dawud who recited the Psalms, Sulayman who commanded jinn and the wind, Yusuf whose patience turned a prison into a throne, Yunus whose dua in the belly of the fish saved him, Ayyub whose patience under affliction is proverbial, and 'Isa the Messiah son of Maryam.
Among all prophets, five are honored as Ulu al-'Azm ("those of firm resolve") because of their exceptional patience and the magnitude of their missions: Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, 'Isa, and Muhammad ﷺ. Each was given a major scripture or new law (shari'ah), and each endured rejection, exile, war, or persecution for the sake of Allah. Allah singles them out in Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:35) and Surah Ash-Shura (42:13) as models of steadfastness for every believer.
Allah explains in Surah Hud (11:120): "And each [story] We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make firm your heart." The prophets' stories are not entertainment — they are spiritual training. They show us that hardship precedes ease, that disbelief is never new, that patience always wins, that family ties cannot save the disbeliever, and that even the most powerful tyrants fall before Allah's decree. Each story is both a warning to the heedless and a comfort to the believer.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah sent 124,000 prophets to humanity throughout history, of whom 313 were messengers (rusul) carrying new scriptures or laws. The Quran names twenty-five of them — we are obliged to believe in all the others as well, even without knowing their names.
The first prophet is Adam (peace be upon him), the father of humanity. The last is Muhammad ﷺ, the Seal of the Prophets — there will be no prophet after him, although 'Isa (peace be upon him) will return at the end of times following Muhammad's law.
The five "prophets of firm resolve" are Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, 'Isa, and Muhammad ﷺ. Allah singles them out for their patience in carrying their missions and the scope of the scripture or law given to them.
No. The Quran is explicit in Surah An-Nisa (4:157-158): "They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but [another] was made to resemble him to them... rather, Allah raised him to Himself." 'Isa will return at the end of times to defeat the false Messiah (Dajjal).
