Paradise & Hellfire in the Quran

A two-column journey through what the Quran reveals about Jannah, the eternal Garden, and Jahannam, the Fire — its gates, descriptions and warnings.

Jannah · The Garden

The Four Rivers

Muhammad 47:15

"The likeness of the Garden promised to the God-fearing: therein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk whose taste never changes, rivers of wine delicious to the drinkers, and rivers of purified honey."

Four rivers are named: pure water, unspoiled milk, wine that brings no intoxication or harm, and clear honey.

Gardens beneath which Rivers Flow

Al-Baqarah 2:25

"And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow."

This phrase — jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā al-anhār — recurs dozens of times in the Quran as the hallmark image of Paradise.

The Highest Level: Al-Firdaws

Al-Kahf 18:107

"Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds — for them the Gardens of Firdaws will be a lodging."

Al-Firdaws is the highest part of Paradise; the Prophet ﷺ taught that above it is the Throne of the Most Merciful, and from it the rivers of Paradise spring forth.

Delights of the Garden

Al-Insan (Ad-Dahr) 76:13–14

"Reclining therein on adorned couches, they will see neither scorching sun nor bitter cold. Its shade will be close upon them, and its clusters of fruit hanging low in submission."

Al-Waqi‘ah 56:15–18

"On thrones woven [with gold], reclining on them, facing one another. Circling among them will be immortal youths with goblets, ewers and a cup from a flowing spring."

The Eight Gates of Paradise

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that Paradise has eight gates (Sahih al-Bukhari). Each admits those known for a particular act of worship:

Bab as-Salah · Prayer Bab al-Jihad Bab ar-Rayyan · Fasting Bab as-Sadaqah · Charity Bab al-Hajj Bab al-Kazimin al-Ghayz · Restraint Bab al-Ayman · Right Hand Bab adh-Dhikr

Ar-Rayyan is reserved for those who fast, and none but them shall enter through it.

An-Nar · The Fire

The Seven Gates of Hell

Al-Hijr 15:43–44

"And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all. It has seven gates; for every gate is a portion [of them] assigned."

Hell is described with seven gates, each receiving an allotted share of those who enter according to their deeds.

Its Fuel and its Guardians

At-Tahrim 66:6

"O you who believe, guard yourselves and your families against a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are angels, stern and severe."

Its keeper is the angel Malik, and over it stand nineteen stern guardians (74:30).

The Tree of Zaqqum

As-Saffat 37:62–66

"Is that a better hospitality, or the tree of Zaqqum? Indeed, We have made it a trial for the wrongdoers. It is a tree that grows from the bottom of the Hellfire; its emerging fruit is as if it were the heads of devils. And they will eat from it and fill their bellies with it."

Zaqqum is the bitter, thorny tree of the Fire, followed by a drink of boiling water (hamim), 37:67.

Its Severity — A Warning

An-Nisa 4:56

"Those who disbelieve in Our verses — We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment."

Al-Furqan 25:11–12

"We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze. When it sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring."

The Mercy in the Warning

Al-Anbiya 21:107

"And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds."

The descriptions of the Fire are a warning and a mercy — a call to turn back to Allah, whose mercy outstrips His wrath.
