The adab of tilawah — how the believer approaches, recites and honors the words of Allah, drawn from the Qur'an, the Sunnah and the works of the scholars. Imam an-Nawawi opens his At-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Qur'an by noting that the Qur'an is the noblest of speech, and so it deserves the noblest of manners in approaching it. Below are the key etiquettes, each with a supporting verse or hadith.
It is recommended to be in a state of purity (wudu) and to recite in a clean place. The mushaf should not be touched without wudu, as Allah says of the Qur'an:
It is preferred to face the qiblah, sit with dignity and tranquillity, and recite in a state of humility as if before a king — for one is in conversation with his Lord. The Prophet ﷺ said:
Begin recitation by seeking refuge in Allah from Shaytan, then the basmalah at the start of a surah (except At-Tawbah):
Recite slowly, clearly and beautifully, observing the rules of tajweed, neither rushing nor distorting the words:
The aim of recitation is not merely the tongue but the heart — to reflect, be moved, and act upon what is read:
The Qur'an should soften the heart and bring tears of awe and longing. Allah praises those moved by His words:
When passing a verse of sajdah, it is Sunnah to prostrate, glorifying Allah. The Prophet ﷺ would prostrate and his Companions with him. The supplication of the sajdah includes:
The mushaf must be honored: kept clean, placed high (not on the floor beneath other objects), not carried into impure places, and held with care. This stems from glorifying the symbols of Allah:
One should not cut off recitation for idle talk, and when the Qur'an is recited aloud, others should listen quietly:
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will have a reward, and that reward will be multiplied by ten. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter." (Tirmidhi 2910). And: "The one who is proficient in the Qur'an will be with the noble, righteous scribes, and the one who recites it with difficulty, stumbling over it, will have a double reward." (Bukhari 4937).
A sample passage — Surah Al-Fatihah and the opening of Al-Baqarah — with key tajweed rules highlighted in colour, plus a legend explaining each rule.

Near-identical verses that trip up huffaz — with the difference highlighted and a memory aid.
Remember: Al-Baqarah adds raghadan ("in abundance"). The longer surah carries the longer phrase.
Remember: Order flips — Baqarah is "enter… then say," A'raf is "say… then enter." Also Baqarah: khatayakum; A'raf: khati'atikum.
Remember: Same surah, two places. In 2:48 shafa'ah (intercession) comes first; in 2:123 'adl (ransom) comes first, and the verb changes to tanfa'uha.
Remember: Identical wording in both places — so the cue is the surrounding context, not the phrase itself.
Remember: Baqarah quotes the hypocrites' excuse; A'raf is a direct command "after its reform." Tie each to its theme.
Remember: This refrain recurs eight times in Surah Ash-Shu'ara after each prophet's story — count the stories to track which occurrence you are reciting.
Remember: Word-identical 31 times in Surah Ar-Rahman. The skill is tracking the verses between the refrains, which never repeat.
Remember: Same opening, different endings. 2:43 ends with "bow with those who bow"; 2:110 continues "whatever good you send forth…"
Remember: Baqarah opens "Wa qulna ya Adam" (We said); A'raf opens "Wa ya Adam." Baqarah adds raghadan; A'raf omits it.
Remember: The opener "Who is more unjust…" begins many verses. In 6:21 it pairs with "denied His signs"; in 6:93 with "said: it was revealed to me."
